UPDATE – Thursday, March 28, 2024: Additional investigation revealed that Bazan was the person who called to report a subject with a knife and described himself. When officers confronted Bazan, he had his hands in his sweatshirt pockets and began moving toward officers. Bazan did not follow repeated instructions to stop and remove his hands from his pockets as officers were backing up and attempting to maintain a safe distance. An officer deployed a Taser which was initially ineffective. As Bazan continued to move toward the officers, Bazan quickly removed his hands from his sweatshirt in an aggressive manner. At that point, an officer fired a shot from his firearm which missed Bazan. After another Taser deployment officers were able to take Bazan into custody.

After evaluation at Pullman Regional Hospital, Bazan was transported to the Whitman County Jail and booked on charges of assault, resisting arrest, intimidation of a public servant, and obstruction.

Wednesday, March 27, 2024: At approximately 11:22 am, WSU Police responded to the 4th floor of Global Scholars residence hall on a report of a male subject with a knife. Shortly after contact officers reported they had fired a shot. The subject, identified as 20-year-old WSU student John Bazan, was taken into custody for obstructing an officer. It was determined Bazan was not struck by a bullet and was transported to Pullman Regional Hospital for evaluation.

Per protocol, the regional officer involved shooting investigative team will conduct an independent investigation of the incident and provide follow up media releases. Also, per protocol, the involved officer will be placed on administrative leave. The Officer’s identity will be released at a later time.

Off-campus shooting reported on Duncan Lane. Update-Officials determine no ongoing threat to WSU Campus 10:15AM

UPDATE Sunday, October 29, 2017 – 10:15 a.m.

The Pullman Police Department has issued the following news release providing detail into the shooting incident that occurred in a neighborhood near to the WSU Pullman campus.

Shooting Injures Two

PULLMAN – On October 29, 2017 at about 1:45 am, Pullman Police officers heard two gunshots as they were responding to a noise complaint in the 1000 block of Duncan. When officers arrived on Duncan Lane, they found numerous persons running in all directions. Officers located two victims with gunshot wounds; a 19-year-old male with a wound to his right torso, and a 17-year-old male with a wound to his arm. Both victims were transported to Pullman Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The 19-year-old was later released from the hospital.

Investigation revealed that a group of subjects attending a party on Duncan Lane surrounded a vehicle attempting to leave the area. The group was trying to forcibly remove someone from the vehicle when shots were fired from the vehicle, striking the victims. The crowd scattered and the vehicle fled before officers arrived.

The weapon is believed to be a handgun and has not been recovered. Both victims are from the King County area of Washington and are not students at Washington State University. Detectives are following up on leads. Shortly after the shooting, Washington State University officials issued an alert to students via their emergency notification system since the location is adjacent to the WSU campus.

UPDATE Sunday October 29th, 2017 9:02AM:

Law enforcement officials have determined that there is no ongoing threat to public safety or to the WSU campus. The Pullman Police Department’s investigation is continuing. Pullman Police are expected to provide additional information about the incident later in the day.
